Speculum is a monumental digital interpretation of Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights. The two side panels, Eden and Hell, illustrate contrasting, even dystopian scenes filled with scarily bizarre composite beings, while the central screen, Paradise, pictures the licentiousness, temptations and excesses of earthly life. These three mutated worlds are so many exaggerated mirrors with acid reflections, examining our relationships with the Other and with technologies. This updating of Bosch’s work enables us to reinterpret mythological and religious stories that speculate on life after death. Another very contemporary reality is to be glimpsed here: that of our lives on social networks, and that promised by the Metaverse, its cryptocurrency, its NFTs and its virtual paradise.
The garden of Earthly Delights is presented, in parallel, in Rouen.
