Twenty-five years after its release, “Amélie” continues to bring a poetic Paris to life. From Montmartre to the Canal Saint-Martin, take a stroll in the footsteps of the heroine, exploring iconic locations and celebrating life’s simple pleasures.
Lounging in a café
It’s hard to start anywhere other than
Montmartre (18th arrondissement), the beating heart of the film. This is where you’ll find the
famous Café des Deux Moulins, where Amélie Poulain works. Its façade,
zinc bar, and red booths still draw just as many
visitors, eager to immerse themselves in the film’s atmosphere. But in Paris,
other equally charming bistros are worth a look!
Walk through the doors of a quiet museum
We extend our immersion with a
cultural interlude. At the Musée de Montmartre (18th arrondissement), you can explore
the neighborhood without the usual crowds found at Paris’s major museums.
It’s a chance to treat yourself to an exhibition here or at one of the capital’s
still relatively off-the-beaten-path cultural venues.
To marvel at the world around us
We let ourselves be carried along once again without
a specific itinerary… After all, that’s part of the spirit of the film:
getting lost in order to observe more closely. And the best way is often
to improvise. In Montmartre, every turn holds a surprise:
steep staircases, colorful facades, charming little squares, and even hidden vineyards.

Enjoy the scenery
You can’t miss the Basilica of
Sacré-Cœur (18th arrondissement) on this stroll. Perched atop the hill, it
offers a spectacular view and, above all, the perfect setting to daydream like
Amélie Poulain. You can climb up to the forecourt to admire the city’s rooftops or
simply settle down on the steps and take the time to look at
what surrounds you: the people, the scenery, or simply the birds…
Skipping stones on the canal
A change of scenery! We
head to the Canal Saint-Martin, another iconic location from the film. It’s against this
backdrop that Amélie Poulain enjoys skipping stones—a scene that has become a cult classic.
The canal banks are perfect for strolling, reading, chatting in the sun, or watching
the barges go by. And why not explore them by bike…

A quick bite… crème brûlée
There’s nothing quite like a sweet, indulgent dessert
to transport you back to childhood and those nostalgic pleasures. To do this,
settle in on a terrace, order a café gourmand, an ice cream, or crème
brûlée… and take the time to crack that thin layer of caramel! Some
museums have hidden terraces that offer moments of calm. Shh, we
didn’t tell you anything!
Settling into a small movie theater
One of Amélie Poulain’s other little pleasures is
going to the movies on Friday nights and watching the faces of the audience
in the dark. The famous scene was filmed at Studio 28 (18th arrondissement), one of
the capital’s 38 art-house cinemas.
And among the many films screened there each year, some
theaters re-release classics. And who knows, maybe Amélie
will return to the top of the bill for its anniversary?
