We love traditional Christmas markets, but what if this year we took the opportunity to travel far away?
Germany
The Goethe-Institut in Paris (16th arrondissement) is the venue for the third edition of this market combining French and German cultures. The venue, which promotes the German language all year round, will be showcasing German Christmas traditions. You'll find decorations and ornaments for the tree, Advent wreaths, floral arrangements, candles and the famous incense cones (Räucherkerzen) that are burned in German homes at this time of year.
-
The little extra? We'll also be there to greet its craftsmen and creators, who will be presenting handmade objects, with a focus on handicrafts from the Erzgebirge region, world-famous for its wood art, with its Christmas pyramids, candle arches and little characters. Creative workshops, German Christmas stories and children's concerts will punctuate the day. From 7 p.m., the market closes with a DJ set by Estéban, leader of Naïve New Beaters.

Sweden
Head for the Christmas market at the Swedish Church in Paris (17th arrondissement), run by volunteers. It's almost like being in a Nordic village, with adorable stalls selling home decorations and gifts: glassware, candles and candleholders, stationery and greeting cards. You'll also be able to sample specialities such as herring and salmon gravlax, as well as cheeses, lingonberry jams and cakes like the delicious mandeltårta, an almond delicacy, or havreflarn, a Swedish oat cake.
-
The little extra? We'll also go there to admire the site. Built between 1911 and 1913, the Swedish Church is a group of red-brick buildings with Nordic-inspired architecture, organized around an inner courtyard. Here you'll find a parish church with its picturesque steeple rising into the sky, and a nursery and elementary school for the children of Swedish expatriates.
