Paris celebrates the Worldwide Olympic Day
A few weeks away from the election of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Paris is more than ever mobilised for the bid. On 23 June 2017, Paris celebrates the Worldwide Olympic Day. The center of Paris, with the support of the French Olympic and Sporting Committee and Paris 2024, is turned into an ephemeral Olympic Park on 23 and 24 June, dedicated to celebrate sport and Olympic ideals.
For two days, Parisians and visitors of all ages are invited to discover more than thirty Olympic and Paralympic sporting disciplines, to attend demonstrations and to meet numerous French athletes.
Around 10 cultural and sportive activity sites will be installed and opened to all, in places such as the “Rives de Seine” park, the Louvre Museum, the Place of Concorde, the Invalides, the Petit Palais and Grand Palais Museums, and the Pavillon de l’Arsenal, with 12 metres-high climbing wall. On this occasion, a large part of the city will be turned into pedestrian zones, offering to everyone an area to walk, ride, and practice skate or rollerblade…
The “Rives de Seine” park, a key site, will welcome events such as fencing, wrestling, archery, gym or pole vaulting. Furthermore the Esplanade des Invalides, will become a playing field hosting soccer, rugby, baseball and volleyball games.
Amazing facilities are planned, among them a floating running track between the Alexandre-III Bridge (with a fixed diving board) and the Invalides Bridge.
Two days of major events are scheduled such as a kayak trip with Tony Estanguet, opening act of the week-end, going from the Stade de France to the Invalides, along Saint-Denis Canal, Saint Martin Canal, Arsenal Port and River Seine. Rowing races and demos will also be presented.
To conclude the week-end a large gathering is organised on the Alexandre-III Bridge.
The celebration of the Olympic Day will demonstrate once again that Paris, more than any other city in the world, is able to cheer happily for Olympic and Sport ideals.
