It hasn’t changed much since the 19th century, so habitué writer Marcel Proust would no doubt have little trouble finding his favourite haunts. The massive gold-capped wrought-iron railings open through four main gates bearing Davioud’s hallmark, into one of Paris’ most stunning gardens. Mothers take their children there. Tourists and Russian community member heading to nearby Alexandre Nevsky orthodox cathedral (1861) enjoy it as well.

A few of the statues here are Antonin Mercier’s Gounod (1897) and Musset (1906), Jacques Froment Meurice’s Chopin (1906), Alexandre Falguière’s Ambroise Thomas (1902), Raoul Verlet’s Guy de Maupassant (1897), and Léopold Bernstam’s Edouard Pailleron (1906).  Another noteworthy curio is a Renaissance arcade that survived the Paris City Hall fire under the Commune.
