Things to do
Children, their parents and their grandparents instantly feel at home in this familiar yet strangely distant ambience. Boat rides on the magical river, and painting, confectionery and gardening classes are only a few of the things to do.
A lovely street train has replaced the donkey-drawn tram that the 1880 Universal Exhibition had bequeathed. Farm animals, exotic birds and play areas are a few of the attractions inside.
History trivia
The official inauguration ceremony took place on 6 October 1860, in the presence of Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, and of several artists (composers Jacques Offenbach and Hector Berlioz, Alexandre Dumas, and Théophile Gautier, for instance). And Parisians loved this shrine to zoology and botany.
The park was abandoned during the wartime and struggled to recover thereafter. The Société du Jardin d'Acclimatation revived its deserted merry-go-rounds, breathed life into the magical river, and flowered the forlorn paths. And Lewis Carroll would have loved the result!
