Involvement in city networks

City Networks

As an active member of city networks, Paris has two goals: being available for others, and benefiting from experience gained elsewhere.

As 60% of the world population - and up to 80% of Europeans - lives in towns, today's major global issues are essentially urban. Coming together to think, exchange and act has become a necessity. Paris is a member of four major city networks:

UCLG

Founded in May 2004 in Paris, the United Cities and Local Governments organisation (UCLG) is the united voice of local governments and the advocate of democratic local self-government. Based in Barcelona, UCLG is the largest organisation of local governments in the world. Representing more than half the world's population, the member cities and associations of the UCLG are present in more than 120 Member States of the United Nations and in the eight regions of the globe - Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Euro-Asia, Middle East and West Asia, Latin America and North America. More than 1,000 cities are members of the United Cities and Local Governments organisation, and 112 national member associations represent all the cities and local governments involved.

The organisation is the only spokesperson for cities, to provide concrete solutions to the challenges of globalisation and urban growth.
UCLG is based on three principles: democracy, local self-government and decentralised cooperation at the service of citizens. The network is the main representative of local governments at the United Nations. It gives a voice to all local governments regardless of their size and their characteristics, whether urban or rural and represents and defends their interests on the world stage. It deals with essential issues for the future of cities and their citizens.

AIMF

The Association internationale des maires francophones (international association of French-speaking mayors), chaired by the Mayor of Paris, brings together more than 156 cities in 46 countries, with a two-fold common objective: promoting the values of the French-speaking world, i.e. solidarity, constitutional state, brotherhood, and supporting the general move towards decentralisation. It helps mayors to fully embrace their role in strengthening local self-government. Improving quality of life, sanitation and public health, multimedia centres, infrastructures, etc., more than 400 development projects have already been completed through the AIMF.

Eurocities

This network of 113 European cities with over 200,000 inhabitants, of which Paris became a member in 2002, has set itself three objectives: to ensure that urban issues appear on the EU's political agenda, to promote transnational cooperation projects between member cities and to share experiences between European cities.

UCEU

Founded in April 1961, the Union of Capitals of the European Union (UCEU) strives to "develop the living feeling of European solidarity". It conducts studies and organises meetings and initiatives intended to promote economic, social and cultural progress in Europe. Its role is also to facilitate the sharing of information and experiences between Member States. Its aim is to foster in-depth analysis between the 27Member States on public transport, telecommunications, employment, etc.
