Autolib’: Paris launches electric car scheme

It is a world first: December 5, Paris is launching a network of electronic rental cars. Find out below how to use this innovative service.
December 5 there is a mini-revolution in the French capital: Paris is launching Autolib’ , an electronic car rental service. To try it, you simply have to hold a driving licence and subscribe at the stations. 3,000 cars will eventually be available in Paris and in 45 communes of Ile-de-France.
What is Autolib'?
A simple, local service which will allow you to rent a vehicle 24/7 from over 250 stations located in Ile-de-France as of December 2011 and more than 1,000 stations by June 2012. Map of towns where you can find Autolib’ 46 towns are participating in the service (figure on 1 October 2011).
What are the service’s opening hours?
The service will operate 24/7.
How to try Autolib', how to recharge an electric vehicle?
You need to hold a driving licence to use Autolib'. The international driving licences are valid. And registration is compulsory if you want to rent a car. To subscribe, take your driving licence, proof of identity and a credit card to an Autolib’ station from early December. Subscription will take no longer than 5 minutes.
Subscription on line You can leave a car in a different station from the one you set out from. It will be recharged directly at the station terminals.
What are the rates?
There are 3 formulas. You pay for subscription and then a rental price depending on the time of use: -Annual subscription (€12/month), with €5 rental (1st half-hour), €4 (second half-hour) and €6 (3rd and subsequent); - Weekly subscription (€15 per week), €7 rental (1st half-hour), €6 (second half-hour) and €8 (3rd and subsequent); - Daily subscription (€10 per day), €7 rental (1st half-hour), €6 (second half-hour) and €8 (3rd and subsequent). Which vehicles are available? Bolloré Blue Cars, 100% electric, 4 seats, equipped with car radio and GPS. The car has a range of 250 km (160 miles). The cars are equipped with 30kW lithium metal polymer batteries. The average recharging time is approximately 4 hours. Where can I go in an Autolib’? The geographical range is the Ile-de-France region (the region to which Paris belongs). Beyond this area, the service will ask you to turn round. The car battery has a 250km range.
