A "rambla" atmosphere on the banks of the Seine

In summer 2012, the banks will be closed to road traffic so that the space can be used for free events. Discover the future developments.

A Spanish-style “rambla” by the water, with fixed structures such as small glasshouses or an athletics track: the banks of the Seine will undergo a metamorphosis.
From July 2012, 2.3 km of the quays of the Seine will be pedestrianised on the left bank, between Pont Royal and Pont de l'Alma.
It will be a multi-faceted project, with one event per week; a specific round the clock project or event will be held from midday Wednesday to midday Sunday.

Where can I enjoy the banks?
Firstly, on the left bank between the Pont Royal (near the Louvre museum) and the Pont de l’Alma (near Alma-Marceau station), and later on the right bank.

The schedule

December 2011: Council of Paris vote on the project
First quarter 2012: allocation of the work contracts
March 2012: start of the work
June 2012: closure of the lower quays on the left bank
July 2012: opening of the pedestrian banks on the left bank and start of the work on the right bank.

What developments will take place?
The developments will link the Port du Gros Caillou, the Pont Alexandre III and the Port de Solferino, over almost 2.3 km of converted banks.
These adaptable mobile spaces will create a platform suitable for families and young children and for holding different events. The design of the site will take several years and allow the project to evolve every year.

Jackstraws
The use of assembled pieces of wood, like jackstraws, will allow the space to be organised quickly and in different ways. They can be arranged to suit the way the space is being used, as jackstraws can form benches, tables or leisure supports for walks and can be transformed into terraces or a stage to meet the needs of the events organised on the site.

Vegetation
To win back the land on the banks, the project will create vegetation on the asphalt. This vegetation will help to revive the species present in the Seine Valley.
Mobile architecture and street furniture
Several types of architecture will be available on the site, including rain shelters, glasshouses and small mobile structures. They will serve as landmarks for users and will be adjustable depending on the vagaries of the weather. Some light furniture, centipede benches and tables, will accompany these nomadic structures.

Signposting
Simple and direct signposting consisting of large markings on the ground and illuminated landmarks will form meeting points and make it easier to move around the site day and night.
An experienced, multi-disciplinary team has been created to bring this original project to life. It is led by Didier Fuselier, Director of Lille 3000, the major cultural event in Lille.
